Cardiac
Congenital heart disease occurs in 40 to 50% of children with Down Syndrome. It can be present even when a murmur is not heard. ECHO cardiograph is definitive and worthwhile. In some conditions, early surgery is needed to prevent permanent irreversible damage to the lungs and vascular system. SBE prophylaxis needed for susceptible individuals.
Atrioventricular Canal Defect ( AtrioventricularSeptral Defect ) is the heart defect that my daughter was diagnosed with. She was operated on when she was 3 months old. Hospital For Sick Children, is where our daughter was sent. The cardiologest( Doctor Hornburger) and the surgeon (Doctor ?????) they are both very good.
**We found the information in the book called**

"If your Child Has Congenital Heart Defect A Guide for Parents", very helpful. It explains the different defects very clearly.

Atrioventricular canal defect; is characterized by increased blood flow, increased chamber volume, and, often, increased pulmonary vascular resistance.
LA = left atrium; LV = left ventricle
RA = right atrium; RV = right ventricle;
AO = aorta
SVC = superior vena cava
